Code of Conduct

At SwingLab Berlin we want every dancer, staff member, and guest to feel safe, supported, and inspired. West Coast Swing has always been about connection, creativity, and respect — and we’re committed to creating an environment where those values shine both on and off the dance floor.

For Everyone

Whether you’re here for workshops, competitions, or social dancing, these guidelines help ensure that everyone can enjoy the event fully:

  • Respect each other: Treat fellow dancers, staff, and volunteers with kindness. A smile, a thank you, or helping someone find their way makes a big difference.
  • Consent first: Be aware that an invitation to dance can be met with a “no”. Respect a “no” gracefully — everyone has different comfort levels and needs on the dancefloor.
  • Respect each others’ boundaries: If you aren’t sure of someone’s boundaries, or can’t tell from their nonverbal cues, then ask them. This applies to dips, tricks, or even close position. If you misjudge, and they ask you to stop, either verbally or nonverbally (such as with a facial expression or a body language cue), then stop.
  • Safe floorcraft: Be aware of your space and mindful of others. If a collision happens, a quick apology goes a long way.
  • Healthy environment: Harassment, bullying, and discrimination of any kind are not tolerated. We want every dancer to feel welcome, regardless of level of dance, age, background, identity, neurotype, gender or preferences.
  • Take care of yourself and others: Stay hydrated, rest when you need to, and look out for those around you.
  • Wristbands & Venue Rules: Wear your wristbands at all times. Only water bottles are allowed in the ballroom. Do not bring outside food or drinks into the venue.
  • Recording & Photos: You’re welcome to record class summaries and take photos during the event. Please ask permission before posting identifiable media of others online. No videos during classes outside of class recap. We also ask you to refrain taking videos during socials, to respect the privacy of all attendees.
  • Footwear: The floor of the ballroom will be made out of linoleum. We have tested it, and it is perfect for dancing with suede-soled shoes. Please plan your footwear accordingly.
For everyone’s safety and to protect the venue, we kindly ask that you avoid dancing barefoot. Additionally, please do not use powders, wax, or any substances on your shoes that could damage the floor.

For Our Professional Staff

Our instructors, judges, DJs, MCs, and volunteers are the heartbeat of this event. To ensure fairness, inspiration, and safety, we ask our staff to commit to:

  • Role models: Act with integrity and professionalism. Participants look up to you both on and off the dance floor.
  • Timeliness: Arrive 15 min early for all assignments (judging, volunteering, shows) to help run on schedule. Keep yourselves informed of any changes in schedule. Arrive early to your classes to offer a smooth transition between classes.
  • Inclusivity in teaching: Create a welcoming classroom space where dancers feel safe to explore, learn, and ask questions.
  • Fairness in judging: Judge based on skill and criteria, not personal preference or relationships.
  • Music & Atmosphere: DJs and MCs should foster an inclusive, uplifting energy — music choices and commentary should be respectful and fun, not offensive or exclusionary.
  • Boundaries: Keep professional boundaries with students, competitors, and colleagues. Mutual respect is key.
  • Support & teamwork: Treat fellow staff members with respect. Remember, we’re all working together to create something special.

Young Dancers

Dancers under 18 are welcome at SwingLab Berlin, but must be accompanied by a responsible adult (18+). The adult is expected to supervise the minor’s participation throughout the event. We want younger dancers to have a safe and inspiring experience while honoring their limits.

If Something Feels Wrong

We take all concerns seriously. If you feel unsafe, experience misconduct, or witness inappropriate behavior:

  • Talk to a SwingLab Berlin staff member (you can find us at the registration desk or on the floor).
  • Email us at swinglab.berlin@gmail.com.

All reports will be handled with confidentiality and respect. Possible actions include a private conversation, removal from competitions, or expulsion from the event without refund if behavior threatens the safety or enjoyment of others.

Our Shared Responsibility

SwingLab Berlin is about dancing, learning, and connecting in a safe and joyful way. We all contribute to the atmosphere we create. By being kind, respectful, and mindful, we ensure that everyone — from first-timers to pros — feels they belong.
